Getting Started

Set up Nabble, create your first list, and add items.

Requirements: Nabble requires iOS 26.5 or later (iPadOS 26.5 or later on iPad). The Apple Watch app requires watchOS 26.5 or later.

Set up Nabble

Setting up Nabble takes about a minute. The first time you open the app, a setup guide walks you through adding the stores where you shop and creating your first list. You can change everything later.

Skipped the setup guide? Open Settings → Setup Guide at any time to run it again.

Create a list

The New List form with a List Name field, a Store picker set to No Store, an Add New Store link, and a Private switch

The free plan includes one list. If you already have one, the + on the Lists screen opens the Nabble Premium screen (see Free and Premium).

  1. On the Lists screen, tap + in the top-right corner.
  2. Enter a name, such as “Grocery Run” or “Project Shopping List”.
  3. Optionally choose a Store. A linked store sorts the list in that store’s aisle order and lets Nabble remind you when you are nearby. Tap Add New Store… if the store isn’t in the list yet.
  4. Turn on Private if you don’t want family members to see this list (Family Sharing is a Premium feature).
  5. Tap Create.

Add items

An empty Home Office list with a tip card explaining four ways to add items: Add Item, Search Products, Scan Barcode, and Your History

Open a list and tap + in the top-right corner (next to Edit), then choose a method:

  • Add Item: type the name.
  • Search Products: search by product name, brand, or UPC.
  • Scan Barcode: scan a product’s barcode with your camera.
  • Your History: pick items you have bought before.

A new, empty list shows a short tip that rates the methods: Add Item (Good), Search Products (Better), Scan Barcode (Best), Your History (Best).

Add an item by typing

The Add Item form for Eggs with a Suggested: Dairy & Eggs chip under Category
  1. Tap + → Add Item.
  2. Type the item name.
  3. Within a few seconds, Nabble suggests a category, shown as Suggested: [category] under Category. Tap the suggestion to accept it, or tap Category to pick another.
  4. Under Amount, choose Quantity or Measured (see below).
  5. Add a Note if you need one, such as “get the organic one”.
  6. Tap Add.

If the item is already on the list, Nabble asks what to do: Update Quantity or Add Anyway.

Quantity or Measured? Quantity is a stepper and a unit such as each. Measured is an amount and a unit: lbs, oz, kg, g, gal, qt, pt, fl oz, L, or mL.

The Add Item form with Amount switched to Measured, showing a number field and a unit picker set to lbs

Search for a product

Search Products results for Yogurt showing product pictures, brand names, sizes, and Dairy & Eggs category tags
  1. Tap + → Search Products.
  2. Type a product name, brand, or UPC, then tap Return on the keyboard.
  3. Each result shows a picture (when one is available), the name, the brand, the package size, and a suggested category.
  4. Tap a result. The Add Item form opens already filled in with the brand and product name, the category, and the package size in the Note field.
  5. Adjust the amount or note, then tap Add.

Tapping a result opens a full Add Item form, already filled in. Tap Add to put it on your list.

Product data comes from open product databases (Open Food Facts and UPCitemdb, plus Open Beauty Facts and Open Products Facts). It is provided as-is and may not always be complete or accurate.

The Add Item form pre-filled from a search result with the name Gerber Yogurt Melts Peach, category Dairy & Eggs, and the size in Notes

Scan a barcode

The Scan Barcode screen showing Product not found, the barcode number, a Try Again button and a Cancel button
  1. Tap + → Scan Barcode and allow camera access when asked.
  2. Point the camera at the barcode. Nabble reads it automatically.
  3. If the product is found, you see its details. Tap Add to List, or Scan Again to scan something else.
  4. If the product isn’t found, Nabble shows “Product not found” with the barcode number. Tap Try Again, or Cancel and add the item by typing or with Search Products.

Low light: tap the flashlight icon at the top left of the scanner. It turns yellow while the torch is on.

Scan Multiple: tap Scan Multiple at the top right to keep the scanner open between scans.

Add from your history

The Your History picker with Bread and Bananas selected, an Only Publix and All History control, and an Add 2 Items button at the top right
  1. Tap + → Your History.
  2. Items you have bought before are grouped by category. By default you see items from the store linked to this list (Only [store]). Tap All History at the top to see everything.
  3. Tap the circle next to one or more items, then tap Add [N] Items at the top right.
  4. Nabble reuses the quantity from your last purchase and reminds you to check that it is still right.

Use the search bar to find an item in a long history. Items you hid in Settings → Suggestions do not appear here. Free accounts show the last 30 days of history.

Edit a list

A list in Edit mode with the title Editing Grocery Run, a Done button, and a Suggested Items section offering Bread and Bananas

Tap Edit at the top right of a list to change it. The title changes to “Editing [list name]” and Edit becomes Done. In Edit mode you can:

  • Tap an item to change its name, category, amount, or note, or choose Move to Another List….
  • Swipe an item to the right to Save for Later, or to the left to Move or Delete it. Saved items wait in a “Saved for Later” section.
  • Tap the pencil next to the list name to rename the list, change its store, turn Private on or off, or Delete List.
  • Use Suggested Items at the bottom: up to ten things you bought before at this list’s store that aren’t on the list now, most often bought first. Tap one to add it. The section appears only when Nabble has something to suggest, and it does not appear outside Edit mode.

Tap Done when you finish. (The + button and Shop This List return when you leave Edit mode.)

Tips for a good first list

  • Link the list to a store so items are grouped in the order you walk the aisles.
  • Add a note when you need a specific size, flavor, or brand.
  • Scan barcodes for packaged goods you buy often. Nabble remembers the category for next time.
